on loss

this is an invitation to contribute to a collective publication on loss. it aims to explore how we deal with what disappears, individually and collectively through publishing as a space for reflection, speculation and connection.

what is loss?
loss occurs when something disappears that was of great importance in the past and which no longer exists in the present. loss happens, when something doesn’t exist anymore that was important to us. it makes us experience an intense unsettling emotional response. in other words: it hurts.

what does that mean?losses are a special form of disappearance. transience is a normal process of life, and not every disappearance is perceived as a loss. sometimes, things disappear but we don't even notice. sometimes it's a good thing when something disappears. sometimes it’s slightly unamusing (like losing your left sock). and sometimes it's very painful - that's loss.

what is disappearing?we all perceive loss differently and deal with it differently. because for each of us, loss means something different. in everyday life, we often don't want to encounter stories of loss. neither our own, nor those of other people. if you’re looking for a space to share your story of loss, you’re welcome to submit it here!
